Process

Throughout the development of the Historic Tree Study Database specific sources of plantings were collected from “A Guide to Forest Tree Collections of Known Source or Parentage in Northeastern Provinces” by Raymond Guries et al. (1981) and 1981 Directory of Forest Tree Seed Orchards in the United States by the USDA-FS (1982). From these two sources, our developers began contacting associated researchers to obtain available documents and location information for the plantings. Once acquired, the data was cross referenced using historical aerial imagery for Google Earth to verify the existence of the plantings, then the plantings were classified as active, inactive, or removed. Each confirmed planting was then added to the interactive dashboard for public use.

The data catalogue functions as a large repository of data associated with confirmed and unconfirmed plantings that has potential to contribute to future analysis. All data recovered for the Historic Tree Study Database has been or will be cataloged and connected with any associated verified plantings. The data catalogue has a standardized tagging system where the historical documents have been tagged based on years of study, species names, survival/health data, measurement data, genetic data, maps, summary, correspondence, and other.
