Welcome

The Historical Genetic Tree Study Database is an interactive database website where you can explore existing data, download historical tree planting data, contribute your own data, and transform physical data into digital copies.

2,000+ plantings and 60,000+ documents

Background

In the mid-late 20th century, millions of dollars were poured into installing and maintaining thousands of genetic and tree improvement studies; however, over the years many plantings have been forgotten due to scientists retiring, lack of funding, and shifts in priorities. This website contains key genetic, survival, and measurement information from over 2,194 of these plantings, 629 of which have accompanying datasets. These documents were obtained through acquiring data by contacting affiliated scientists, using Google Earth Pro tm, and visiting universities and facilities. The recovered historical planting datasets can be downloaded and used for further research in carbon sequestration, climate change, and temporal phenology studies.

Using the Data

The data stored in the Historical Genetic Tree Study Database can be used in research for climate change, carbon sequestration, and phenological studies, seed availability, and best devastation.

A map of the Eastern United States depicting the Survival (live trees) by seed source origin location in the 2024 update. There are dots placed on the map to represent the number of survival (live trees) that are located in many locations in Eastern America. The legend shows that the dots, in order from smallest to largest, represent 3, 7, 11, 16, 20, and 24 trees.
